This spring, put your best foot forward

Whether you’re picking up the pace after winter or haven’t done any sport for years, the new season with lighter evenings and better weather is your chance to kick-start a new regime.

For the over fifties, it’s vital to build some form of exercise into every day. Regular exercise can help boost energy, increase strength, help you sleep better and support your immune system. It’s also good for your mind, your mood and your memory.

But it’s all about finding the right sport for you. The good news is, you can forget expensive gym memberships – this spring, just try walking!

What’s so wonderful about walking?

Walking is low impact, which means it’s kinder to your joints, and is actually better at fat burning than some higher intensity sports. It’s good for all your muscles, including your heart, and can help ease stress and anxiety. Just by walking, you can reduce your blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol, too.

Get motivated in the great outdoors

Set yourself a realistic goal – try to fit a walk in after your lunch or evening meal. You could use a pedometer or an app like Map My Walk on your smartphone to track your progress. If you prefer the company of others, ask a friend to join you or look out for local walking groups. Whatever you prefer, it’s all about getting out in the great outdoors.

So this spring, why not try walking your way to fitness? You don’t need any special equipment, you can go out any time of day and it’s free!

Speak to your doctor before starting an exercise programme, especially if you have a pre-existing condition.
